Why An Earth-Sheltered home?

Most houses today are produced to make money for the builder with no regard to the home owner.  With the ever increasing concern of the cost of energy and cost of maintaining a house the earth-sheltered home is the perfect answer.

Most people when they think of an earth-sheltered home think it means that it is subterraneal.  Nothing could be further from the truth and you do not even need a hillside to bury the home under.  The home can be put on flat ground and then 6 feet of earth is bermed up and over the top of the home.  This will form an incredible amount of insulation and maintain the temperature inside the enclosure at between 55 and 60 degrees F no matter what the temperature is outside.  So in the winter instead of heating the enclosure from the outside temperature all that is needed is enough heat to raise the temperature from the ground temperature of 55-60 deg F.  In the summer the temperature inside the enclosure will need to be heated with the outside air.

Because one of the bigger cost is heating and cooling this cost will all but eliminated.  Maintaining the structure will be almost nothing because the roof will never need replacing and the outside will never need to be painted.  This structure is made up of 24x24 or 28x28 foot modules and can be put into any number of configurations.  The cost is comparable to a traditional structure.

The structure is oblivious to earth quakes, fires, tornados and hurricanes.  With a small amount of solar panels the cost of electricy for lighting and appliances is all but eliminated making this structure a zero carbon footprint building.

By using a layout of a mexican hacienda the structure would have an atrium that could be used to grow hydroponic fruits and vegetables.
